Baptisia bracteata - Cream Wild Indigo
Baptisia bracteata - Cream Wild Indigo
As one of the first prairie species to bloom, Cream Wild Indigo graces your landscape with stunning cream and yellow flowers, signaling the arrival of spring. Witness the transformation as light green seed pods develop and mature into rich black hues in the fall. After a frost, its grayish-green leaves can turn a deep black color. Thriving in well-drained soil and partial shade, Baptisia bracteata serves as a gracious host to a variety of butterflies, including the Wild Indigo Duskywing. Caution should be exercised as parts of the plant are considered toxic (contains baptisin and cytisine). This is one reason why the plant serves as a host for a number of butterflies. The chemical components in the plant deter pests and keep the eggs safe from harm.
