Silphium terebinthinaceum - Prairie Dock
Silphium terebinthinaceum - Prairie Dock
Prairie Dock is a robust perennial that has unique sandpaper-like leaves and is cool to the touch due to its deep-reaching roots. This also allows it to be very drought tolerant. Tall towering stalks bear striking yellow flowers, reminiscent of sunflowers, reaching heights of 8 feet or more. This resilient plant can hold its own with more aggressive prairie grasses. It blooms later than other silphium, but it still welcomes bees and birds, providing nectar and seeds.

The plants that I ordered arrived with their leaves pretty beaten up. I think that on one of them the growing tip was not damaged, and it has already begun to grow. The jury is out on the other plant. I am watching it closely and hoping for the best. I didn’t complain to the nursery as I am hoping both plants are tough and will ultimately survive.
